This is the shade people mean when they say Golden Retriever without qualifying it. A clean mid-gold, neither pale nor deep, sitting squarely in the middle of the breed standard’s “rich, lustrous golden of various shades”.
It is also, quietly, the shade that gets asked for least, because people arrive having decided they want either the very pale ones or the very red ones. That is a shame, and occasionally it is useful: a classic golden puppy with a wonderful temperament will sometimes still be here when the reds from the same litter have gone.
If you are choosing between a golden puppy and a red one from the same litter and you cannot decide, the honest advice is to let us tell you which of the two suits your household better, and to trust that over the colour. In four years you will not remember which one you thought was prettier at eight weeks.

A Golden Retriever's coat can only carry one pigment, and every shade from the palest cream to deep mahogany is that single pigment expressed more or less strongly. There is no such thing as a white Golden Retriever, and no such thing as a black one. Colour tells you nothing about health or temperament, and we price a puppy on the individual dog rather than on the shade of its coat.
